Onychomycosis is a fungal nail infection that usually affects one or more fingernails and/or toenails and often involving the little toenail or the great toenail. You will know that it is onychomycosis through a pattern or patterns which your nails present:
- Subungual hyperkeratosis
This is the scaling that will occur under your nails.
- Superficial white onychomycosis
These are the flaky white pits and patches which appear on top of your nail plate.
- Lateral onychomycosis
This is the yellow or white opaque streak which appears at either side of your nail.
- Proximal onychomycosis
These are the yellow spots which appear upon the half moon or lunula.
- Distal onycholysis
The end part of your nail lifts up, while the free edge frequently crumbles.
- And the ultimate destruction of your nails.

Aside from Onychomycosis, there are a few more fungal nail infections, such as:
- Candida
This is the infection of your nail plate which is in most cases resulted from paronychia, beginning near the cuticle. The cuticle will be red and swollen, and be lifted off from the nail plate. There are evident yellowish, whitish, blackish or greenish marks which appear near the nails and spreads out. If you will press on your infected nails, it has possibilities of being lifted off its bed and is very tender.
- Moulds
These cause infections which are more often impossible to differentiate from tinea unguium.

- Tinea Unguium
This is often the result of not treating tinea manuum or hand, and/or tinea pedis or feet, and may cause injury to your nail.
